Dow Vietnam joined hands with local province to clean up the beach

The Vietnamese government is currently putting an ambitious goal of reducing marine plastic leakage by 75 percent by 2030. To make it happen, building a plastic circular economy is one of the solutions that Vietnam is following. Also, the public awareness enhancement and behavior change education are very important works.

In the morning of September 28, 2020, Dow Vietnam Team joined hands with Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), People’s Committee of Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province and Parliamentary Delegation of Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province to host “the Campaign to make the world cleaner” and “the activity of donating 300 water tanks and 50 trash bins to fishermen in Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province reaching out to sea and local tourism areas.” The events attracted more than 700 participants and volunteers from various stakeholders and forces in Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province (local public officials, police and military officers, workers and students).

Dow Vietnam Team included 11 representatives from Country Leadership Team, Packaging and Specialty Plastics, Dong Nai Coating Materials Plant and other functions.

After an hour clean-up, the participants collected more than 600 kg of waste that included organic waste, PET bottles, bottle caps, flexible plastics bags, plastics straws, styrofoam, cigarettes, paper packaging, fishing nets… The collected waste was transferred to local URENCO waste collector company for recycling.

Joining the events, Mr. Ekkasit Lakkananithiphan, General Director of Dow Vietnam said, “Dow has hosted the annual beach clean-up events in the last two years in Vung Tau City to enhance public awareness about plastic waste reduction and segregation at source. And this year we are very delighted to witness the joint efforts from various stakeholders and forces to proactively clean up the beach and create another life for plastics.”

This clean-up event marked the second #PullingOurWeight Program in 2020 for Dow Vietnam Team. Tentatively, late October 2020, in collaboration with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and a NGO namely Green Hub, Dow Vietnam will host the third #PullingOurWeight Program in Phu Yen Province. At the same time, we will launch the project of Statistics & Analysis of plastics waste category; Training on waste segregation at school & community; and the contest of “Green School and Green Marine.”
